Peaks, Springs & Natural Wonders
Beyond the beaches lies an island of alpine forests, rare butterflies, cold springs and 1,216 m peaks. Nine unique natural destinations that are worth a day each.
Why explore the nature side?
When the sea hits 30°C, Rhodes’ mountains and springs are 8-10°C cooler. Perfect mid-summer escape — and most are free.
Rodini Park
One of the oldest landscaped parks in the world — cited by Pliny the Elder. A shaded green ravine with streams, ponds, free-roaming peacocks, and the tomb of the Ptolemies carved into rock. Once the seat of Rhodes' famous rhetoric school (attended by Cicero & Caesar).
Highlights
- Free entry — open daylight
- Walking distance from Old Town
- Tomb of the Ptolemies (Hellenistic, 2nd c. BC)
- Café/taverna on site
Local tip: Brief but rewarding stop — combine with Acropolis of Rhodes (Monte Smith) 10 min away.
Fasouli Springs (Psinthos)
An emerald-shaded natural spring under centuries-old plane trees in the heart of Psinthos village. Tavernas serve stream-cooled watermelon and grilled goat next to the running water — a local-only summer ritual.
Highlights
- Free access — sit by the stream
- Taverna tables on the water
- Cool plane-tree shade all day
- Easy 25-min drive from Rhodes Town
Local tip: Go midweek for lunch — weekends the locals pack it out.
